Since the spring of 2014, the Jennings STUCO has partnered with the Special Olympics of Eastern Missouri. We have volunteered at the track meet held at DeSoto High School for the past three years. We were invited by the DeSoto High School Student Council to attend this event which they have put on for the past seventeen years. My STUCO members served as buddies for each of the athletes from Next Step for Life, a living center for adults with intellectual disabilities. So when we arrived at Desoto High School they introduced themselves to their athlete, had time to unwind between events in the "Olympic Village" where the athletes listened to music and played games for prizes. Each STUCO buddy had to make sure that their athlete was at each event on time and cheered them on during their event. If their athlete placed in an event, they got to go to the podium and see them awarded their medals. They ate lunch with their athletes and many of them needed help for tasks as simple opening water bottles. I took as many pictures as I could of each STUCO buddy with their athlete that attended. The students that attended the track meet were seniors Gabrielle Scott, Paris Siggers, Cormekia Tanter, Charles Manning, Tyerra Caldwell, and Shivanyae Ivy. All of them demonstrated great patience, compassion, and willingness to help others.
